Self-Assesment & Action Plan
Career paths often include twists, turns, and even pauses, but positioning yourself in the right environment is key. That might mean gaining experience in a specific practice area, working with certain clients, or finding mentors who support growth and networking. To define your goals, start by reflecting on what motivates you, whether it’s passion for an industry, enjoyment of the work itself, or the reward of advocating for clients. From there, you can identify the setting that will best help you achieve them.
Here are some examples of questions to help you identify and prioritize your professional needs:

-
Do you need to be at a specific law firm with a particular practice area or client base?
-
Do you need to find a team that provides more opportunities for advanced or independent work like partners trusting their associates to interact directly with clients?
-
Do you need to be in an environment that offers more mentorship or sponsorship opportunities like knowing your partner(s) will advocate for your promotion?

These questions may not have quick answers, so we’ve created Self-Assessment and Action Plan resources to help you clarify your needs and priorities. The Self-Assessment prompts reflection on personal, professional, and financial factors to build a “big picture” of your career goals. The Action Plan then helps refine that into a realistic, measurable path forward—such as targeting a new role within a set timeframe.
